Understanding key-based vs. username/password authentication.

Key-based vs. username and password

Important

Authentication mode is set at the app level and cannot be changed once users are created. If you need to change the authentication mode, you will need to delete all users and create new ones.

Key-based auth

Each user receives a unique authentication key in the format PREFIX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.

Pros

Simple to implement and use
No registration flow needed
Perfect for easy to use apps
One key = multiple subscriptions

Best for

Games, software licenses, simple apps where you generate and sell keys.

Username and password

Traditional authentication where users register with username, email, and password.

Pros

Familiar user experience
Password reset support
Email change functionality
Better for user-initiated signups

Best for

SaaS products, community apps, services where users self-register.

Go to App → Users → Create user. The system generates a unique key.

Implementing username and password auth

Create a user in the dashboard
Go to App → Users → Create user (username mode). The system generates a registration link.

Send this link to your user. They'll complete registration by setting username, email, and password.

The user completes registration
The user visits the link and fills in:
- Username
- Email
- Password (min 8 characters)

Reset a password (optional)
From the dashboard: Users → Select user → Reset password. This sends an email with a reset link.

Token system

After successful authentication, the C++ client receives a JWT token that's automatically used for subsequent requests.

Token properties

Property	Value
TTL	5 minutes (auto-refreshed by client)
Signing	RS256 (RSA public/private key)
Contains	`app_id`, `app_user_id`, `subscriptions` (product IDs)
Used for	File downloads, variable fetching, subscription checks

The C++ client handles token refresh automatically. You don't need to manage tokens manually.
